Bug in unix sort command

Re running sort on list of words

The sort option -u, without -c, should output only the first of an equal run, but it outputs more than 1 equal entries.

It seems that non-printing chars, e.g. a space at the end of the word, are included in the comparison for dups. Could there be an option that compares printing chars only?
