Pixel dirt on NT Emacs with Font Courier New - Bold - 10

In GNU Emacs 20.7.1 (i386-*-nt4.0.1381)
 of Tue Jun 13 2000 on buffy
configured using `configure NT'

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

Start emacs with emacs -q --no-site-file.  In buffer *scratch*,
execute the following key sequence:

return return return return C-SPC up up up up menu-bar 
edit props fc b down M SPC M SPC M SPC M SPC M SPC 
M SPC M C-a C-k

The left serifs of the M's remain visible, one pixel for both the
upper and the lower serif.

The font is set as follows:
(frame-parameter nil 'font)
"-*-Courier New-normal-r-*-*-13-*-*-*-c-*-iso8859-1"
