Instead of this in xdisp.c:23046
strcat (lnum_buf, " ");
use the equivalent of
(setq line-number-space-width 0.5)
(insert (propertize " " 'display '(space . line-number-space-width)))
and adjusting the x-coordinate of the glyphs after the space
appropriately.
