bug#36649: 27.0.50; pure space and pdumper

I had a look at the patch to see whether it had diverged from the
current code base a lot -- and it mostly applies.  The major thing
that's changed, though, is that comp.c has a lot of code to handle
purespace, and those bits have to be removed, too.
