Are there particular images or image types that cause the crash?

I am certain that JPEG triggers the crashes. As for other formats, I do not know.

If you rebuild using --without-native-image-api does it work better?

Interesting. I recompiled Emacs without native image API, and then I was able to launch EMMS with album art 5 times in a row without a single crash. Interesting!
