Maybe, but we never said anything about occur-target to begin with. It's like 
telling school-children that from now on they should use a different place for 
smoking weed.

I'm not necessarily against it either. There may be a slight advantage for some 
code that can make good use of the new format. However, we can keep supporting 
existing code more or less indefinitely.

It is also really not a good programming interface. I just fixed several 
bit-rot bugs in tex-mode.el (none related to my changes) and it turns out that 
the exact details of populating an occur-mode buffer are fiddly and easy to get 
wrong.
