This is a significant change of the implementation of a public API.  Isn't
it risky to make such changes on the release branch?

Yes.  The question is, how much will this be used till then.

I've updated the docs and NEWS in the meantime, this should help.

On the bright side, though, the new feature uses the same code path as the core functionality, so it's still indirectly tested by anyone using the built-in project support.
