Ouch. Which version of git? Have you reported this on the git lists?
Have you tried building a newer version? Have you tried a shallow clone,
so that you are minimizing the size of the download at the expense of not
having full history? If you don't need the the git repository, you could
try the gitweb links that create a .tar.gz snapshot of a given commit.
For example,
http://git.savannah.gnu.org/gitweb/?p=gnulib.git;a=snapshot;h=6fb5e02a;sf=tgz
