My file system for '.' is too small for this test to fail ... ;-)

What about simplifying the first s/... to eliminate all blanks?

-sed -e '1 {s/ [ ]*/ /g;q}' out > out2
+sed -e '1 {
+          s/ //g
+          q
+        }' out > out2
