ls: directory indication, again

Hi all,

It is about time revisit the unfinished 'ls -Fd /' patch which was
discussed couple months ago.

The is_root() now uses libc code, which is shorter and faster, as pointed
out by Eric earlier.  I thought a test might be appriciated, so I
included one.  Hopefully this time around the change can be pushed either
to upstream or wall of rejection.
