I've just pushed an additional commit (update gnulib to latest) that
causes "make syntax-check" to succeed once again, avoiding this
failure:
maint.mk: out of date copyright in ./gnulib/lib/version-etc.c; update it
make: *** [maint.mk;1199: sc_copyright_check] Error 1
