Then we could have something like system-case-insensitive-filenames-p and the likes, and we could eliminate many of the system-type tests. I think this is more trouble than it is worth. It would merely improve the elegance of the system internals; it would do nothing for the user. We have many tasks waiting to be done that would make Emacs better to edit with. I think it would be a shame for a job like this to take away scarce volunteer energy from that.
