I understand that the variable is not just obsoleted, it no longer has
any effect whatsoever. Isn't that so?

I don't like to be forced to migrate. As I explained, it's a nuisance
for me, because I need to dig up information I long forgot.

Declare it obsolete in NEWS and slate for removal in a couple of
releases. Like we always did.

Well, I'm asking that it _does_ work, right?
Anyway, this conversation seems to go nowhere. I made a request and
explained the reasons; if you want to ignore it, I guess I'll survive.
