Out of all the suggestions made here, this is probably the best.

I'll file a bug report later.

And I'm sorry for being so harsh.  Apparently many people appreciate VC
and it works for them.  I'll study the relevant chapter in the manual,
then I'll try to use VC for a while to form a better opinion.
