For what it's worth, the venerable proprietary word processor WordPerfect had 
this feature (under the name "reveal codes").  The feature was widely used, 
too.  At least, people I knew who normally did not become experts in their 
software tools nevertheless still still knew about and used "reveal codes" on a 
regular basis.
