P.S.  Emojis as a solution looking for a problem:
When they became popular in places like Japan in late 90's /
early-2000's they did solve a problem, namely the need to send  "more
than plain text" in a very band-width limited environment; so sending
characters that could map to glyphs that were "picturesque" did add
value of sorts.
