Could you investigate why that isn't happening automatically? I
recall addressing this years ago when I last had access to AIX.

I don't know about the Apple stuff, but is there anything wrong with
the `powerpc-apple-darwin*' support there appears to be in the
development version apart from it not being mentioned in etc/NEWS?
