It freezes but it doesn't crash or infloop; on my system the image
appears after a long time (maybe three quarters of an hour, I didn't
time it).
It seems to be whizzing around png_load, including filling the X image
and mask from PNG data (xfns.c:~8025) for each of the image's
3,871,488 pixels, for a long time.
