Though it `basically' worked, there were problems with it*, and the
author thought that a fair bit of surgery would be required to correct
them. It'd be nice of course, but as far as I know he didn't have the
time to do the work.

* Apparently libxft claims to be usable even for programs that use
traditional X font lookup/metrics, but in fact, doesn't do a very good
job. Fixing the problems would presumably mean adding native xft
font-handling support to emacs.
