How can I find out an error where emacs just beeps

Every once in a while, when I do file completion via <space>, emacs beeps
and refuses to complete the filename. But when I press <space> once more,
emacs does complete the filename just fine.
I'm using partial-completion-mode and ffap, so I'm not sure what's causing
this. My question now is, what is the best way to trace this down.
How do I find the code that's causing this.
