I understand that having different point values associated with the
same screen position complicates things immensely, but do you think is
it a catastrophe that we should avoid at all costs, and if so, why?

I'm asking because in the context of the proverbial bidi-aware Emacs,
such situations will be very hard, if not impossible, to avoid.  If we
need to avoid them at all costs, the design of the bidi display should
consider this as a constraint as early as possible.
