Error with MetaPost mode and transient-mark-mode

Start Emacs with

emacs -q -no-site-file -f transient-mark-mode -f toggle-debug-on-error foo.mp

Then click with the mouse pointer onto the "Meta" menu.  The result is
this backtrace:
