I thought that having the new faces attributeless by default, and handling extensions (i.e. gmake, ...) even when the filename doesn't indicate it, would be enough to keep everybody happy...People are very unhappy with the changes that you made, so I am going to look for someone to undo part of the changes. Parts of the changes may be good; the thing is to find the good parts. I don't have time to do that myself. All I could do is revert them all, since that would be quick. I hope someone else will step forward to make a better selection.
I really don't see how you can undo parts of the changes, the more you undo (and taking continuation lines out already started this) the wronger target matching will get again. Nobody complained about lacking correctness before. They only care about looks (which used to be also partly wrong). But since font-lock as a parser is at the core of my change, you might as well throw it all out again and I'll keep my version to myself :-(
If you change your mind, be quick, because I had planned to invest this evening, and that is already lost now.
