Bug when loading a small fontset after a large one

Hello!

I had a LaTeX buffer with AUCTeX 11.55 displayed with 18pt Bitstream 
Courier. When I returned to more usable 10pt big gaps appeared:

In GNU Emacs 21.3.50.1 (powerpc-apple-darwin7.8.0)
