Hi Andre, it can work on Solaris 8, and has done all the way up to 21.3.

Maybe it's something as simple as diff-mode now using the first file name
from the diff?  The second is the only one that corresponds to the buffer if
-L is not used.  (Unless diff-mode is meant to support the arbitrary
application of a diff to an arbitrary buffer, in which case neither file
name in the diff corresponds.)  Sorry, I don't really have the time to
report bugs, let alone investigate/fix them myself.
