    I can: current-buffer is just constantly scrolling (it's watching an active
    log file, or it's a game, or a shell buffer with a process gone wild, ...).

If you hold down the mouse on a buffer that is scrolling continually,
you will see it scroll and you will see a region start to highlight.
Wouldn't operating on that region be the right thing?
