Point taken. For 4.2, you can still use
./configure CFLAGS=-DNDEBUG
Using the gnulib assert module adds consistency with other GNU
projects that do likewise (coreutils, m4, ...). But since it
is merely a convenience thing, rather than correcting a bug,
I withdraw the patch for the branch.
