No, I think "now" is right. Here's the old behavior and the new one:

$ POSIXLY_CORRECT=yes grep-3.7 '[:space:]' /dev/null; echo $?
$ POSIXLY_CORRECT=yes grep-current '[:space:]' /dev/null; echo $?
grep: character class syntax is [[:space:]], not [:space:]
