Thanks, this helped.
Changed the appropriate lines into:
. sy pdfinfo @$1 | \
awk '/^Page size:/ {print ".nr pdf-wid (p;"$3")"; \
print ".nr pdf-ht (p;"$5")"}' \
> /tmp/pdfpic\n[$$]
This seems to work fine.
