I don't know anything about savannah. I'm using a repository on
subversions for Emacs-related stuff and as far as I remember, only
pserver would work for me, at least when I got the Emacs repository
set up. Will pserver not work at all now? I only have kerberos
access to GNU and I can't see anything under http://savannah.gnu.org/
telling me about ssh anyhow.
