A package was submitted to savannah.gnu.org
This mail was sent to address@hidden, address@hidden
Ramanan Selvaratnam <address@hidden> described the package as follows:
License: gpl
Other License: Please note that I am no lawyer... so not too sure of the
version issues.
All GTP PO files are GPLed.
Package: GNOME Translation Project - Tamil
System name: tamilgnome
Type: GNU
Description:
Hello,
I have been asked to take over the further development of the GNOME Translation
Project (GTP) for Tamil by the current coordinator, Dinesh.
The project has no home page as such since Dinesh left his college and all work
work has been done via a Yahoo Group.....
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tamilgnome/>
where you will immediately notice the registration to a commercial service
(spammer?) problem.
Another major problem is somehow and for some unknown reason potings in Yahoo
Groups cannot be searched via external search engines!
BTW, the project is a bit dad due to not enough participation :-(
So I am about to revamp the project by advertising the high philosophical and
moral grounds behind the GNU project\'s offical desktop (OK one of the official
desktop) and then attracting some zealots not mere translaotrs.
We need this as Tamil translation is really pushed by some high standards
(which I am all for) re: use of non-english technical words (but at the same
time not loosing the plot too much). Luckily there are atleast three lists on
the web (to which I am subscribed to) to discuss these issues, where the
participants are from varied backgrounds (govt. agencies to die-hard
linguists). Also it must be mentioned that these are godd places to advertise
the GNU project too ;-).
So to summarise it I am looking to run a project similar to...
http://savannah.gnu.org/projects/serbiangnome/
....with an external web resource like the Serbian GNOME people have.
It will be nice to find a host for this external web resource with you but not
neccesary. FYI, It will have to have notions of user accounts...so serverside
scripting is needed (SQL DBMS is not an absolute neccesity)...I am OK with PHP
but if due to licensing issues there is no PHP Python will do ()a bit of
learning for me I gues.
Anyhow getting back to the main request...ie, a GTP coordiantion point at
Savannah, few issues I would like to inform you are as follows.
I also want to develop / look into
*GTK based software (Emacs being GTK enabled as of recently is worth noting)
*Unicode based issues / editors ( Emacs\' recent Unicode support although the
Tamil fonts licence issues are not yet clear to me, Qemacs etc.)
*Projects like south Indian (Dravidian) language families and free software to
Free software for schools and similar institutions.
All PO files for the GTP are licenced according to FSF\'s wishes , I
guess....so there should be no problems concering licences.
So please let me know whether you can help us.
Best Regards
Other Software Required:
Do not think this applies to GTP-Tamil
Other Comments:
not applicable to our project, I think...
