In the *scratch* buffer, C-j will work similar to C-x C-e.

You might also like M-x ielm RET.

Or M-x eshell RET.  (You can type both vaguely Bourne-ish and vaguely
Lisp-ish stuff at it.)

Sorry that I'm not helping you much with the problem at hand.  Good
that Michael is there :-)
