if you have a "-F" in any of your dired directory list switch settings
(as a unix user might), then the dired internal function
'dired-move-to-end-of-filename' will dutifully strip off the last
character of the file name. that works ok when 'ls' is the
directory list generator, but not so well when you're using
tramp and smbclient :-).
this may be the source of some of the:
File no longer exists; type `g' to update dired buffer
error reports in this mailing list.
