I cannot reproduce it locally, using recent commit
7f6c9253838baba7cdd38573179bc0d3a724e25b in Emacs master branch. Have
you tried it with "emacs -Q"?

Have you tried to clean up the cache?

Does it also happen with other remote hosts? The current one belongs to
the "" domain.

Does it help to set vc-handled-backends to nil?
