[aspell] Problem running aspell with XEmacs |

I am using Debian 2.2r1 w/ XEmacs 21.1.12 and I just installed aspell 0.31 .
I am using whatever versions of ispell/flyspell/etc that come with that
version of XEmacs. I set the last line in my .emacs file to
(setq-default ispell-program-name "aspell")
in order to use aspell instead of ispell. As soon as I run aspell mode I
got the following error in my minibuffer:
aspell exited with code 255
I commented out the last line of my .emacs and used ps to find out what
command line XEmacs was running (`ispell -a -m -d american -B`). I then ran
`aspell -a -m -d american -B` from the command line and I got the following
error:
Sorry, I can't read the file "/usr/lib/aspell/american".
I made a symlink of /usr/lib/aspell/american to /usr/lib/aspell/english
and then ran `aspell -a -m -d american -B` from the command line again and
it worked fine. After that I uncommented the last line of my .emacs file
and closed and reloaded XEmacs. When starting flyspell-mode again I got the
same error:
aspell exited with code 255
In neither case did any buffer come up showing any kind of output from
aspell, I do not know if this is because aspell produced no output or if
ispell.el was just not reporting that output. I tried running XEmacs from
an xterm to see if any output would show up in the xterm window, but none
did.
If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
