Here we go.
Sample Document:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
\documentclass[a4paper,UKenglish]{article} %% {lipics}
\begin{document}
\section{Hello}
The inline formula $x+y=z$ can be written as a display formula:
\begin{equation}
x+y=z
\end{equation}
\end{document}
%%% Local Variables:
%%% mode: latex
%%% TeX-master: t
%%% TeX-PDF-mode: t
%%% End:
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
It works with TeX-PDF-mode set to nil (no matter if article or lipics
class), but not with t. (However, the OP said it won't work with lipics
but with article, so his problem is different from mine.)
