I'm not sure if the following is what you were after, but I think
the attached patch "simulates" the problem that I'm having. It's
a patch for compile.at in the tests/ subdirectory.
I generated this diff against autoconf-2.49e.
I will be gone for the rest of this week and most of next week,
so please be patient if it takes me a while to respond to further
e-mail messages.
