.... dated March 29. And that patch fixes a bug that seems relevant
to our problem: "6277636 *sh* can crash if it creates too many
temporary files". But....

109324-05 does have the predictable-tempfile fix, and so I'd expect
that it would have the same performance problems that 109324-08 does,
if that fix were the underlying problem. But as you've reported, it
doesn't have the performance problem. And the changes between
109324-05 and 109324-08 do not seem relevant to the problem. So, most
likely, it's something else.

I will scrounge up a Solaris 8 system that I do have more control
over, bring it up to date with respect to patches, and see how well it
does. It'll take a couple of days though.
