Thanks, also to Jim.  FWIW, I've moved away from in-tree VPATH builds
because they cause an overhead for
  find $srcdir -type f | xargs grep $whatever

which is an extremely useful operation, even with git.  Of course,
it is also partly a habit from the times before git.
