question about non-recursive Makefile and subdir_include

Hi,
Does anybody know - what happend with idea to provide posibility to non-recursive making in automake. Robert Collins proposed patch year ago (adding subdir_include). But it was not included in release. My question is - is it actual now to add this functionality? Or this direction was rejected by some reasons.
