I got some help in a private email (on this issue, not the autoheader one
though) and the answer was to kill all of the autogenerated "stuff" - all
Makefile.in files, Makefiles, libtool, ltmain.sh, config.sub, etc and
regenerate completely fresh. Once I did this everything worked.
