I could not disagree more.

attitudes like that are why some of us don't bother using your code.
People who can't stand other opinions but their own, better should
refrain from asking on mailing lists.

I took into account the fact that patches for this have been rejected
(same attitude).

Technically, I've been bitten too many times by "silent Makefiles" to
find them useful. Esp. those issuing messages such as "Compiling xxx.o"
instead of the real commands they are executing. There are more things
but compiler-warnings/errors.

fine - it's useful to _you_.

not me.  It's been an option in my configure scripts for several years.

Reading your comment yesterday closely, that means I'm stupid also,
because I don't do things _your_ way.
