Cannot ./configure a2ps for building under Mac OS X

I've been attempting to build a2ps for Mac OS X (10.0).               
Unfortunately, it                                                     
appears that the configure script does fails to build the necessary   
files.                                                                
It reports (as an example) the following:                             
creating Makefile                                                     
sed: 31: cs3124.s1: unescaped newline inside substitute pattern       
sed: 14: cs3124.s2: unescaped newline inside substitute pattern       
                                                                      
and does so for many different files.  The output from the configure  
operation is included.
