a2ps fails installation on solaris v5.8

Greetings,
I'm trying to install s2ps v4.13b on a Sunblade 150, (Solaris v5.8). 
Here
is what I've done:
1. ./configure
2. ./make check  **  Failed.  Got thru comparing postscript and then I
got
"1 of 25 tests failed"
3. ./make   ** Worked (no reported errors)
4. ./make install   ** Failed on //etc/install -c -m 644 README
/usr/local/share/a2ps/README

I played with the Makefile such that "INSTALL_DATA = //etc/install -m
644".
This helped but I stopped when make got to the liba2ps.lai stuff. 
Couldn't
work around this and I don't have the time to keep pursuing it.  Any
suggestions?  Thanks.

PS - I've tried in both csh and bash
