This is a regression.  The older assembler does:

        .text
        .intel_syntax noprefix
         mov ebx, [0xEE000F0]
         mov dword ptr [0xEE000F0], ebx
address@hidden memory-6]$ /usr/bin/as -o y.o y.s --32
y.s: Assembler messages:
