Google Summer of Code 2007 is under way

The GNU project participated in Google's Summer of Code programme in
2006. Several good proposals were submitted for findutils in
particular.

However, the resources of the programme were limited and the GNU
project was able only to accept a small number of projects. Sadly,
none of the findutils projects were among this number. This is not a
poor reflection on the quality of the applications; indeed a number of
them were very promising. However, the GNU Summer of Code mentors
ranked all the project proposals as a community, and other proposals
were deemed to be of higher priority for the GNU project.

In the intervening time, some of the suggestions have already been
implemented (for example, locate now supports the slocate file
format). The work remaining to implement some of the suggestions is
now too small for a viable project (for example, the creation of an
slocate database).

However, there are some remaining projects which represent a
significant amount of work and are suitable for Summer of Code
projects in 2007. These ideas (and some ideas for other GNU projects)
have been collected at
http://www.gnu.org/software/soc-projects/ideas.html.

If you have suggestions for other findutils projects or comments on
the existing ideas, please send them to the address@hidden
mailing list. If you have suggestions for other GNU projects, please
discuss them with the developer communities for those projects. If
you have comments on or questions about the GNU Project's involvement
in the Google Summer of Code programme, please email
address@hidden

Thanks,
James.
