Interesting.   Could you tell me the result of these commands on one
of those systems?

echo 'kill $$' | xargs -I{} sh -c '{}' ; echo $?

echo 'kill $$' | xargs -I{} sh -c "{}" ; echo $?

echo 'kill $$' | xargs -I{} sh -c {} ; echo $?
