Probably, as long as the shell recognises them as scripts rather than
say just objecting that they're not in .exe format.

Yep.

It's a misfeature, but not one we can easily do anything about,
automake likes to stop if there's failures in a test list.

Automake has got better about objects in subdirectories, so maybe we
can talk it into doing that and having just one list of tests.
