but perl-mode doesn't.

I just read in perl-mode.el that perl-mode-hook does get run:
Turning on Perl mode runs the normal hook `perl-mode-hook'."
but C-h v perl-mode-hook for some reason turns up nothing, while it
does for other major mode hooks.
