    At this point I believe it to be a problem with the version of GCC I'm 
    using. I built this GCC 4.1.2 and my guess is that I did something wrong 
    in this step (although other binaries are building just fine). I am 
    creating an incompatibility somehow with the way I'm building GCC.

If that is true, it could be a bug in the GCC documentation or in its
build procedures.  Or it could be a bug in GCC's code.  Whichever it
is, it ought to be fixed.  So please continue to investigate.

You could try compiling various files in Emacs with various GCC versions
so as to see whether it is really a case of miscompilation, and if so,
in which file.
